Canine PLi

Concerns have been voiced concerning the accuracy of the canine PLi test with some studies yielding a 44 – 67% sensitivity for chronic pancreatitis (Vet Record Dec 2010), similar to that for lipase measurement.  Please be warned of false positives also – erronous diagnosis of pancreatitis based on a positive cPLi can lead to the correct diagnosis being missed, if diagnostic tests are stopped at this point.  In addition true positives may be present in cases where the pancreas is secondarily affected, eg splenic haemangiosarcoma adhesions.  Correlation with ultrasound findings is strongly recommended.
