Patient Preparation

Patient preparation for Ultrasound procedures

GENERAL PREPARATION

A 12 hour fast is appropriate for the vast majority of patients for abdominal ultrasound.  HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE THAT PATIENTS FOR ECTOPIC URETER EVALUATION SHOULD BE STARVED FOR 36 HOURS TO ENSURE AN EMPTY COLON. Sedation will be performed in all patients for abdominal ultrasound except where specific contra-indication is present. Neither fasting nor sedation is required for echocardiography.

OWNER INFORMATION SHEET

It is recommended that owners are provided with the owner ultrasound information sheet in advance of their appointment (see under ‘Forms’ tab).

CONSENT FORM

All owners should have signed a copy of the NVi ultrasound consent form (see ‘Forms’ tab), to give written consent for extensive hair clipping. This should be signed in addition to the usual practice consent form, and if a copy of this consent form has not been signed, unfortunately this may prevent the examination from being performed.

RENAL BIOPSIES

Please give me advance notice for patients being booked for renal biopsy for PLN; these samples go to the European Renal Histopathology service at Utrecht and require special transport medium which is refrigerated at home  (I will need to be aware in advance so I can bring this with me for the appointment).

ON THE DAY

Patients should be admitted to the surgery prior to their appointment time. Owners are not permitted to be present during examinations, except where agreed in advance.
