Patient preparation for Ultrasound procedures

It is recommended that owners are provided with the owner information sheet in advance of their pets appointment. All owners should have signed a copy of the ultrasound examination consent form provided, to give written consent for extensive hair clipping. This should be signed in addition to the usual practice consent form. If a copy of this consent form has not been signed, this may prevent the examination from being performed.

Please give me advance notice for patients being booked for renal biopsy for suspected PLN; these samples require special transport medium which is refrigerated at home – I will need to be aware so I can bring this with me for the appointment.

The patients bodyweight should be recorded, as this is required for interpretation of ultrasound measurements.

Animals must have been fasted for 12 hours, as certain parts of the examination will be prevented if the animal has been fed.  PATIENTS FOR ECTOPIC URETER EVALUATION SHOULD BE STARVED FOR 36 HOURS TO ENSURE AN EMPTY COLON.

Patients should be admitted to the surgery prior to their appointment time. Owners should not be present during examinations, except where agreed in advance. The room in which the examination is to be performed should be able to be almost completely darkened.

Sedation is preferred in all patients for abdominal ultrasound to reduce panting and abdominal tensing, and will enable a faster and more accurate examination. However, it is appreciated that in some patients sedation will be contra-indicated or undesirable.  Sedation for echocardiography should be avoided if possible as catecholamine induced dynamic changes can be abolished.
